Twice as many die' in Africa after surgery

Patients undergoing surgery in Africa are more than twice as likely to die following an operation than the global average, researchers say.

But they say the most worrying revelation was just how few Africans have access to elective surgery - surgery that is scheduled in advance.

The number of these operations is 20 times lower than the demand, the study in the Lancet medical journal says.

They call the deficit a "silent killer".

Prof Bruce Biccard, a co-author of the study from the University of Cape Town, told The Guardian the main problem was a lack of medical staff to spot complications after the surgery.

"[The reason] that people do so terribly in Africa from a surgical point of view is that there are just no human resources," he said.

Post-surgery survival rates are lower in Africa than the global average despite patients there being younger and lower risk, the report says.

Patients in Africa also mostly undergo surgery that is "more minor" and have "fewer complications".

It was the largest study of its kind ever undertaken in Africa, conducted by 30 African researchers across 247 hospitals in 25 countries.

Ex-VP Mujuru 'was hit on the cheek with a stone by Zanu-PF activist': Spokesperson

Harare - A Zimbabwean opposition leader and her entourage were Thursday attacked with stones by suspected ruling party activists in Harare, her party said. Joice Mujuru, a former vice president of the country who is now leader of the National People's Party (NPP), and her supporters were pelted while on the campaign trail. ZIMBABWE: Zimbabwe opposition leader dies in US helicopter crash

Albuquerque — Authorities in the US state of New Mexico say key Zimbabwean opposition leader Roy Bennett has been killed in a helicopter crash. State Police Lieutenant Elizabeth Armijo confirmed Bennett's death on Thursday, a day after a helicopter carrying him and five others went down in a mountainous rural area of northern New Mexico. Obert Gutu, spokesman for the MDC-T opposition party, said the loss of Bennett, a white man who spoke fluent Shona and drew the wrath of former President Robert Mugabe, was tragic. Gutu says Bennett's wife, Heather, also died. The crash killed five and injured a sixth person aboard. The helicopter went down about 6 p.m. Wednesday near the Colorado state line. Armijo said no additional information was immediately available about the circumstances of the crash.
